Warranty and right of return are not the same thing

"I don't like it, it has a warranty, I'll return it" mixes up two different rights. The right of return (withdrawal) and the warranty solve different problems, run on different clocks and come with different conditions.

Right of withdrawal: you changed your mind

For online purchases, most countries give you around 14 days of unconditional withdrawal: you can return the product even if it's flawless. In physical stores it's mostly store policy, not law — a shop saying 'return within 30 days' is applying its own rules.

Warranty: the product turned out faulty

The warranty kicks in when there's a defect that traces back to manufacturing, and it lasts for years. Not liking a product is not a warranty case; you need a fault, a defect or a missing promised feature.

Which one, when?

For anything you notice in the first days, use the return window first — being unconditional makes it your strongest right. For defects that appear after the window closes, the warranty path is open. That's why knowing both dates matters: return windows are measured in days, warranties in years.

Frequently asked questions

Can I withdraw after opening the box?

Usually yes — opening to inspect doesn't void the right. Exceptions exist: hygiene products, custom-made items and opened software or media.

Can a store say 'exchange only, no refunds'?

Not for online purchases where a legal withdrawal right applies — you can insist on a refund. In physical stores, if the product isn't faulty, the store is free to apply its own return policy.

I found a defect after the return window closed — what now?

Use your warranty: write to the seller and follow the repair–replacement–refund ladder. If you believe the defect existed from the start, say so — in the first months the burden of proof is usually on the seller.

A product arrives damaged from shipping — is that a warranty case or a return?

Shipping damage isn't a manufacturing defect, so it falls under delivery/return procedures, not the warranty — photograph it as soon as you open the box and report it to the seller. Most sellers replace shipping-damaged items free of charge if reported within the first 24-48 hours.
