Is an extended warranty worth it?
The 'add 2 more years of coverage' offer at checkout raises a fair question: is the money worth the risk? The answer depends on the product, the price and the coverage — but the things to check are always the same.
First, know what's already free
The legal warranty already covers you (2 years in much of the world), and some credit cards automatically add purchase protection. Before paying, work out what the plan actually adds on top of these free rights.
Coverage: defects or accidents?
Extended warranties usually cover manufacturing defects — drops, liquid damage and cracked screens typically need a separate 'accident protection' plan. If a broken screen is what worries you, extending the defect warranty won't help; read the coverage line by line before buying.
A simple decision rule
If the plan costs more than ~20% of the product price, it's rarely worth it; for cheap-to-repair products it almost never is. For expensive, hard-to-repair, heavily used items (laptops, phones, appliances) it can make sense. If you buy one, track its end date separately — extended warranties expire quietly.
